Cracking the Code of Team Success: Learn from Google!
In 2012, Google launched an initiative known as Project Aristotle to explore the dynamics of its teams and identify the factors contributing to their varying levels of success. Over two years, researchers examined 250 attributes across 180 teams. Traditionally, the company’s executives believed that assembling the best individuals would create the best teams.
Key Findings on Team Success
As the study progressed, the researchers uncovered two key behaviors common among high-performing teams:
Equality in Conversation: Team members engaged in conversation at similar rates, a phenomenon termed "equality in distribution of conversational turn-taking."
Social Sensitivity: Successful teams exhibited high "average social sensitivity," meaning they were adept at sensing how others felt through tone of voice, facial expressions, and other nonverbal cues.
These traits are closely linked to psychological safety, a concept that fosters a supportive environment where team members feel comfortable expressing themselves.
